My daughter has an imaginary friend! I have had 3 other children and this is the first time we have encountered an imaginary friend. She is very vocal about her special friend, Emily. Emily often does what my daughter, Teagan has recently done or what my daughter is not allowed to do! It is very amusing! Her animated expressions and role play when retelling Emily’s adventures are highly entertaining. Emily has a brother, Jo and a baby sister. Jo is very naughty and sometimes fights with Emily. Emily’s mum is very compliant and lets Emily get away with things I would not allow Teagan to do! She craftily highlights this on many occasion.
Emily is a testament to the power of my daughter’s imagination. Teagan can easily describe Emily’s appearance, age, behaviour, home and family car. Emily has become a part of Teagan’s little world. She is also quite naughty at times which Teagan vividly explains.
My family and I really enjoy hearing about Emily’s many antics. We ask Teagan many questions about Emily to gain further insights into this little friend, to which Teagan gladly responds! This little imaginary friend is an interesting way of learning more about Teagan’s current inner world; her likes and dislikes, interests, wishes, fears and concerns. Emily is a unique and magical expression of Teagan’s imagination and it’s wonderful to see her thinking abstractly as she interprets her friends actions and thoughts.
Emily is not around all the time. She comes and goes depending on what is happening at home. I don’t find Teagan playing with Emily. Emily is more like another version of Teagan.
Teagan is a creative, resourceful and imaginative little soul who is advanced in social development and learning, thanks perhaps to 3 other sisters and an ardent reality.
